Supporting Students with Type 1 Diabetes
Diabetes is a serious medical condition where blood glucose (sugar) levels are too high. There are two main types: type 1 and type 2. Most students in our college who have diabetes will have type 1, which is a lifelong condition caused by the body’s inability to produce insulin, a hormone that regulates blood glucose.
Type 1 diabetes is not linked to diet or lifestyle, and its cause is currently unknown.
This year, we have a small number of students with type 1 diabetes. They all use continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems that connect to their mobile phones. It is essential that they have access to their phones at all times, including during assessments, as these devices help them monitor and manage their condition in real time.
Students must also be allowed time during lessons to treat their diabetes if their blood glucose levels fall outside the recommended range. They should remain in the classroom while doing so, in case they need assistance.
Tutors and support staff who work closely with these students have received training from the Paediatric Diabetes Service.
