Student Life Update
With increasing numbers of young people experiencing low mood and declining mental health, and with levels of our referrals for anxiety increasing, we are pleased to update you about our pilot project with MIND Jersey. The amazing Amy Hall, manager of the Children and Young People’s service at MIND, will be delivering 6 sessions based on the Decider Skills programme here in college. We are initially trialling this in partnership with the Health and Social Care team and I’d like to thank Chris Gavey for her enthusiastic support and commitment to this initial pilot.
What is Decider Skills? : The Decider Skills course aims to support young people with recognising and managing difficult emotions and behaviours, using a skills-based approach to develop coping skills and resilience-building. The sessions will focus on anxiety, sadness and anger and will help participants to learn ways to manage these emotions more effectively. Decider Skills will also teach relaxation and grounding techniques and help individuals to support themselves. It will be delivered in a relaxed, informal, confidential space. Pippa or Deborah from the student life team will also attend to support the sessions.
If you have any questions please contact Pippa or Deborah Macdonald on teams or call into the student life office. We really hope this proves to be a positive experience for the young people who have signed up the the sessions and we are keen that it will run again after this initial period of 6 sessions.
Recycle Awareness Week
Recycle Awareness Week will be supported at a later date with a ‘Swap Don’t Shop’ event that will happen in November in the Great Hall. To make this a success please can you sort any items you would like to include in this event and we will give further details of the date in due course.
And last but not least… please have a read of the details of this yearly charitable event. If anyone in college would like to provide a donated gift – please drop off at the Student life office and we will make the delivery direct to Brightly. DONATION DROP OFF DEADLINE IS WEDS 15TH NOVEMBER TO STUDENT LIFE SO WE CAN GET YOUR DONATIONS TO BRIGHTLY BY FRIDAY 17TH.
Brightly Charity CHRISTMAS APPEAL 2023
This Christmas, Brightly (formerly Brig-y-Don Children’s Charity) will be offering a voucher, a small gift, and a selection box to around 180 children and young people that we support who are under the care of Children’s Services. We will be offering each of them the following: –
- Young people living in residential care (children’s home) – £50 voucher.
- Young people living off-Island in residential care – £70 voucher, but no gifts due to transport difficulties.
- Care leavers up to the age of 25 years – £100 voucher.
- Children of care leavers aged 16 years or under – £50 voucher.
I know that this may seem very generous, but for many of these children and young people, it may be the only gift they will receive this year.
