Student Life Update
BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The theme of Black History month this year is Saluting our Sisters, and it aims to emphasise the vital role black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities. This year’s commemoration will feature trailblazing black women who have made incredible contributions to literature, music, fashion, sport, business, politics, academia, social and health care, and more.
During Black History month we will be highlighting individual black women who have made extraordinary contributions across various fields, from literature and music to fashion, sports, business, politics, academia, social care, and healthcare; women who have made a diverse and profound impact on society.
This is an excellent website with a wide range of resources and information – we highly recommend a look www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk
Please keep an eye out for some amazing posters around college featuring the outstanding achievements of black women who are pioneers, leaders, innovators and influencers. We will also be suggesting books to enjoy by black women writers.

STUDENT REP UPDATES!
This week saw training provided by Ellen from Student Life for the newly recruited student reps. We have recruited and trained 32 students from all curriculums across the college. The reps will provide feedback from their student peers for each curriculum and will also represent Highlands college at events such as sixth form celebrations, award ceremonies, curriculum meetings and visits from VIPs – for example meeting with the Governor of the Island, politicians and visitors from other jurisdictions. The training focussed on their role and responsibilities and what each termly rep meeting will comprise.
Ellen will coordinate and facilitate the termly rep meetings.
As ever – thank you for your support!
Paws your day and come and meet the therapy dogs (can you see what we did there?!)

Here in Student Life, we have also welcomed the wonderful Therapy Dogs Nationwide team who many of you may have seen at the Fresher’s Fayre. Therapy Dogs Nationwide is a national charity where volunteers take their own dogs into establishments from schools to care homes and hospitals to provide an opportunity for people to meet and interact with the dogs. Using animals especially dogs, as therapy is not a new idea, they have been used for over 40 years in the care sector. The benefits of Animal Assisted Therapies (AAT) have been extensively studied and results range from improvement in general health and wellbeing, increased confidence levels, reducing stress levels and enhancing mood. You can check out their website here Home – THERAPY DOGS NATIONWIDE (tdn.org.uk). The presence of the dogs in the student life lounge always proves very popular and they will be with us every Monday up to half term.
