Principal’s Update
Dear Colleagues,
Full-time students have settled in well to the new term and induction activities. Enrolments stand at around 700 for the 6th and 177 for Higher Education, including degree level apprenticeships.
The strike action had minimal impact on our students due to NASUWT’s movement to action short of strike again. The Heads and Deputies have adjusted their claim to 10.4% and teachers and lecturers remain at 15%. Negotiations are continuing. The Heads were offered additional lump sums but declined.
You may have read an article in the Bailiwick Express which incorrectly stated that a student was left without a course in hospitality. Less than 5 applicants applied for the 2-year BTEC course and therefore were offered alternatives, including a tailored made full-time Hospitality course with dual qualifications. The parents were very happy with our support. A statement was issued, it has yet to be picked up.
Thank you to all staff who organised and resourced the Freshers’ Fayre. This has become a regular feature in our calendar and a great way to celebrate the enriching elements of our curriculum.
Roadshows begin next week in our main feeder schools where we take our offer out to the students in Key Stage 4.
Lucy Fosse our Head of Marketing and Communication will be off for a sometime and her team are covering key projects like the UCJ graduation supported by Eileen, Ben and myself. Anyone willing to volunteer on the day of the UCJ Graduation will be warmly welcomed. This will be held at the Town Hall with the reception at the Royal Yacht.
Next week at SLT we will be focusing upon budgets and Special Educational Needs. There has been a major growth in students joining us with a Record of Need. We are increasing resources in terms of staff and learning now.
We have a new Assistant SENCO, plans for a sensory room and additional staff support hours.
I am also meeting with the Principal and CEO of the Isle of Wight College Ros Parker this week. The Colleges have shared practice before, and we are exploring new opportunities.
Finally, Rob Moy and I have presented another business case for the final tranche of Levelling up funds for this calendar year. I expect to present this to CYPES colleagues this week.
With my very best wishes for an enjoyable week.
Jo
