Principal’s Update
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you enjoyed a lovely public holiday weekend.
Last week we had a full external evaluation of our work on human rights in the 6th form and were awarded “Silver Accreditation”. We now hold an award in Leading Parental Partnerships and in achieving the next step-up to Silver Accreditation are demonstrating our ongoing commitment to being a people centered learning organisation.
Strengths of our work
- Vision and Values permeates all that we do;
- Colleagues and students demonstrate passion and integrity;
- We are inclusive;
- Quality assurance is a thread through everything and ensures we listen and act;
- We are authentic and students are great advocates for the impact we have
Areas for future focus
- Make the language of the convention a common language for all, particularly so that as students progress into adulthood they will promote and articulate human rights throughout their lives – Ambassadors for Rights?
- Make explicit links between our work and the articles – N02 – non-discrimination for example.
- Embed through all activities, for example staff and student recruitment and induction – explain how our work is ABOUT rights, teach and learn THROUGH rights and ensure our work validates and PROMOTES a rights agenda for life.
- Consider Rights Champions in all areas.
- Engage in more training which is rights focused for staff drawing on resources from the Children’s commissioner’s Office.
Thank you to Helen Foster who started this work, developed and progressed by Donna-Marie Toudic and supported by Nicola Brown, Dreena Collins and Eileen Buicke-Kelly.
This week we are judging the 6th form PRIDE Awards, so thank you for your nominations. This promises to be a great event celebrating our students’ achievements.
I am also on the judging panel for the Jersey Finance “Rising Stars”, promoting talent in this important sector of the economy.
At SLT, we are focusing upon Safeguarding as part of our half termly “deep dive”; we also have Stuart Penn from Skills Jersey updating us on their work and finally a look at the new roles in Marketing and how Lucy Fosse is leading their agenda over the coming months.
I will be interviewing for a HR Consultant with Sharon Ward and Patryjca Zakrzewska. This individual will operate out of the Compliance Team and be a welcome resource for us all.
These short weeks are lovely, but often pressured as we seem to have the same workload, just less time to complete it, so please give yourself a break and be aware that you can’t do everything!
Best wishes
Jo
