Principal’s Update
Plymouth University Stage 1 Approval
Earlier this week UCJ (University College Jersey) was granted Stage 1 Approval from the University of Plymouth as part of the process to offer:
- 3-year qualifying degree in Childhood studies, which will replace the existing FdA and BA (Hons) top-up Childhood Studies.
- Level 4/5 Foundation Degree that replaces the current Higher National Diploma Sport Science provision.
The approval panel were extremely complimentary regarding the quality and content of the approval submissions, which reflected the diligence and effort that the programme teams put into the proposals.
Principal Develops International Connections
Jo deployed to Kenya over the weekend to develop links with Utalii College and Malindi Bright Future Academy. See attached the signing of the MOU between ourselves and Utalii College:
Kenya Utalii College (KUC) is a leading African hospitality and tourism training institution. Established 47 years ago the College has trained over 60,000 graduates from around the world who continue to serve in the local and international hospitality and tourism industry. The College opened its doors in 1975 and was established under the Hotels and Restaurants Act, (Cap. 494, Laws of Kenya) which has since been replaced by the Tourism Act, 2011.
Whilst in Kenya, Jo is meeting Beatrice Inyangala at the Education Ministry to discuss educational opportunities between the two jurisdictions working across various sectors. Then meeting with Senior Leadership Team (SLT) at Bohma College to discuss future hospitality recruitment opportunities. After this Jo will fly to Mombasa and onto Malindi to visit Malindi Children’s Home, then will be volunteering and teaching at Malindi Bright Future Academy.
Sustainability
The College alongside GoJ (Government of Jersey,) is in discussion with Affinity Private Wealth (APW) to work collaboratively to deliver Carbon Literacey Training through 2024. The proposed program is for GoJ to deliver 4 sessions and for the college to deliver 2 primarily to staff with some engagement with APW. This is a fantastic opportunity for the college to engage with an ESG award-winning company across Jersey supporting our roadmap to an Established Standard. Other opportunities for the college will include work placements, guest speakers delivering sustainable finance, pensions, and business, also growing opportunities for staff to engage in CPD (Continual Professional Development).
Print Free Friday
Continuing our Sustainability Pledge, we are aiming to reduce printing throughout the curriculum year by 20% to support this initiative and strengthen signing the Global Climate Letter. The College will be going printless on Fridays from the week commencing the 29th January ‘24.
AOC (Association of Colleges) Training
Tony Tyrer and Paul Antonio are currently undertaking the AoC Senior Leadership Development Programme. This is a highly interactive and respected training programme which aims to develop the strategic skills of senior leaders in the further education sector. It also provides the opportunity to network with colleagues from other colleges and training organisations across the UK, to share and develop best practice.
The course consists of 3 modules focused on self-reflection and leading with personal impact, leading strategically and leading transformational change.
These development programmes help to ensure that our SLT is kept up to date with the latest strategies and network support required to help Highlands continue to become an outstanding college.
