10 ways to relate to others (and yourself) in a positive way this Christmas
.
Christmas is often seen as a time to connect, relax and indulge, but it can also bring stress and strain to relationships and communication.
Spiritual teacher Ram Dass aptly remarked, “If you think you’re enlightened, go spend a week with your family” highlighting the unique challenges of the season.
Instead of dreading these moments, you can embrace strategies that transform dysfunction and disconnection into empowerment.
Backed by expert advice and data, here are 10 tips to help you navigate the festive period with confidence and joy.
.
- Create your own traditions: Focus on celebrating Christmas in ways that bring you joy, whether it’s staying in pyjamas, ordering takeout, or skipping traditional customs that don’t resonate with you.
 .
- Avoid debt: Prioritize financial stability over extravagant spending; true loved ones will value your well-being over material gifts.
 .
- Be selective with company: Spend time with people who respect your boundaries and nurture your mental health; it’s okay to avoid those who don’t.
 .
- Embrace challenges as growth opportunities: View festive stress as a chance for self-awareness and practice patience and playfulness in navigating triggers.
 .
- Check your motivations: Set resolutions based on excitement and positivity, not self-criticism or feelings of inadequacy.
 .
- Take time for yourself: Carve out moments of solitude to recharge and reconnect with your own needs during the busy festive season..
 .
- Set and honour boundaries: Limit commitments, decline events that drain you, and focus on protecting your mental and emotional space.
 .
- Navigate family dynamics thoughtfully: Avoid regressing into past behaviours; take breaks, connect with friends, and remember that you can leave challenging situations.
 .
- Communicate kindly: Choose your words carefully to avoid unnecessary conflicts and foster empathetic, non-reactive conversations.
 .
- Reconsider alcohol: Drinking isn’t mandatory; explore healthier habits or alternatives if alcohol feels less aligned with your values or goals.

The All New Book Club
As I was so rubbish at getting people together for the last book club, herding cats springs to mind, Well-being will be launching the new book club in conjunction with the wonderful Stephen and the Jersey Library in the new Year. The library has a large list of book club books to lend and we will choose our next good read.
The library will host the club once every 3 weeks, to come along and talk about the book we are reading, with a new book each half term. Just message me by whatever method you prefer and I will add you to the list. I will then set up a group chat on Teams, to keep the conversations rolling.
