Year 10 students get put through their paces in UCJ Sport visit
Year 10 BTEC Sport students from Haute Valle were put through their paces when visiting the UCJ Sport Lab.
The group of 22 took part in, and learnt about, sport science testing methods, including VO2 max and Electromyograph use.
VO2 Max test is considered the gold standard test for measuring aerobic fitness (the average professional footballer averages 65 ml/kg/min and our HV test subject registered 63.1 ml/kg/min!).
Meanwhile Electromyograph measures electrical activity in a muscle and can be used to see how many muscle fibres are being recruited to perform a contraction.
Both methods are essential for inferring optimum training strategies for athletes.
The session was hosted by UCJ Deputy Head Andrew McGinnigle and Lecturer Peter Irving. The pair showed the Year 10s sport-science based tests in action while inspiring them to study on-island at UCJ.
