RECYCLING
Every building now has recycling bins see location map below.
HC Recycled Bag statistics Sept 22 – Aug 23
Total number of bags collected 6520. Recycled 123 bags (2%)
Broken down as follows:
Paper – 51
Plastic – 38
Cans – 34
Mixed waste 6397
This a poor result as recycled bags (123) only made up 2% of the total number of bags collected.
Recycled Bag statistics for Sept to Dec 23 only
Total number of bags collected 3575. Recycled bags 140 only (4%)
Broken down as follows:
Paper – 48
Plastic – 49
Cans – 43
Mixed waste 3435
Another poor result with recycled bags (140) only making up 4% of the total number of bags collected.
As you can see, while there is an improvement, we still have a long way to go to reach our target of 30%. We have installed additional bins around the various buildings, can you all make a conscious effort to ask your students/staff to use them.
Decarbonising Government October Update:
Binning the recycling myths for good!
There are many misconceptions around recycling in Jersey. We often hear that all our recycling gets burnt anyway.
This is wrong.
We only send our recycling to reputable companies that have been checked. These companies turn the recyclable materials into new products that feed into the supply chain.
This applies to all recycling in Jersey (parish collections, one-off items dropped off at La Collette, and Government collections). Some recycling may be collected in the same vehicle collecting general refuse – but these loads are never mixed!
Only contaminated recyclables are diverted to the Energy Recovery Facility to be burnt – which is why it’s so important to segregate your recyclables correctly and check what can and can’t be recycled.
Carbon Literacy Training
We’re really excited to announce that Carbon Literacy Training is back! The Decarb Programme Board has agreed to deliver the course corporate-wide, so the next session will be taking place in November.
While there’s limited spaces for this session, there should hopefully be more opportunities to book onto Carbon Literacy by the new year. The Decarb Unit (DCU) decarb@gov.je

Fire Risk Assessment of Highlands College – Update
Martine Westwood (CYPES H&S) and Wayne De Ste Croix (JPH Architects) are currently in the process of finding solutions to resolve the intolerable & high risks identified in the Fire report.
Originally, out of our eleven buildings, we had 3 Intolerable, please see below:
| Building | Location | Issue | What has been done | Current/ remaining risk |
| Turner | 1st floor Life skills Kitchenette | The kitchenette is a higher risk of fire due to cooking appliance, which means persons could get trapped in the inner classroom with no way out and because of students with behavioral and mobility issues they would be and an increased risk | As SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) is currently in place, which staff are not to do any cooking whilst the inner classroom is in use. Currently waiting for JPH architects to produce a structural design/alteration. Also, Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPS) will be put in place at the start of term | Reduced from Intolerable to High |
| Camden | Fire doors in the metro area | The fire doors in metro by the kitchens end do not have automatic closers nor are rated fire doors. Meaning in a case of a fire in the ground floor smoke would travel up the back staircase of Camden. | Automatic closers have been installed and new rated fire doors are due to be installed by contractors. | Completed |
| Nash | Trowel trades classroom | Inner classroom, person could become trapped in an event of fire in the main workshop. | An opening between the walls has been made, so an alternative exit is now provided to the classroom, fire doors and frames to be installed soon | Completed |
| COVID-19 – reminder of current situation (Please note the College does not have any LFT kits available)To align with the final phase of Jersey’s COVID-19 response, with effect from 1 August 2023 , any instances where an employee is off sick with COVID-19 will be recorded as sickness absence on MyView and subject to ordinary sick leave procedures. This means that a medical certificate will be required after three days of absence, like any other period of sickness absence. In line with the revised guidance, if anyone experiences symptoms of COVID-19, or is unwell, like any other absence, they should stay home until they feel better. Islanders should seek medical advice and contact their GPs if they have concerns or if symptoms persist. COVID-19 related absence will be treated as a managing attendance indicator in line with the managing attendance policy. |
Please note, that if you are absent from work due to covid, this now counts towards normal sickness which means you will need to provide a medical certificate on the 3rd day.
Although there are no policies or laws in place anymore regarding isolating, it is recommended that they stay home for 5 days.
