Fire Risk Assessment of Highlands College – Update
All risks were given the following categories:
- Intolerable
 - High
 - Medium
 - Low

Jersey Property Holdings were originally going to tackle the Intolerable and Highs first, however, it soon became apparent that the enormity and scope of the works across all schools meant that they could only cope
with the Intolerable ones before beginning of term.
Out of our eleven buildings, we had 3 Intolerable, please see below:
| Building | Location | Issue | What has been done | Current/ remaining risk |
| Turner | 1st floor Life skills Kitchenette | The kitchenette is a higher risk of fire due to cooking appliance, which means persons could get trapped in the inner classroom with no way out and because of students with behavioral and mobility issues they would be and an increased risk | As SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) is currently in place, which staff are not to do any cooking whilst the inner classroom is in use. Currently waiting for JPH architects to produce a structural design/alteration. Also, Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPS) will be put in place at the start of term | High |
| Camden | Fire doors in the metro area | The fire doors in metro by the kitchens end do not have automatic closers nor are rated fire doors. Meaning in a case of a fire in the ground floor smoke would travel up the back staircase of Camden. | Automatic closers have been installed and new rated fire doors are due to be installed by contractors. | High |
| Nash | Trowel trades classroom | Inner classroom, person could become trapped in an event of fire in the main workshop. | An opening between the walls has been made, so an alternative exit is now provided to the classroom, fire doors and frames to be installed soon | Low |
All these measures have been discussed with the Health and Safety Manager of CYPES and the Fire Service Liaison officer.
There are other high and medium risks to deal with, with a mixture of responsibilities between the Landlord (JPH) and us, being the Tenant, which we have already reduced.
