Baseroom Grand Opening
Learning Support celebrates revamped low sensory space for autistic learners
The Highlands College Learning Support team has been involved with a revamp of the Baseroom.
The low sensory area creates a quiet, calm and inviting area for study, chill and collaboration.
Learning Support Team Leader, Fallon Leitch says the team is proud of what’s been achieved: “The Baseroom is a valuable low sensory area which we resource for our autistic learners. More than 20 students have access [to the room], whether they choose to use this daily, weekly or monthly, our team are always on hand to greet them.
“We are excited for the year ahead, as we have lots of new enrichment activities to explore.”
A grand opening of the area was held on Thursday 30 May, where staff members were invited to take a moment out and enjoy what the refurbished space has to offer. Features of the room include study pods, a sensory corner, a lounge area and a collaboration table.
Feedback from those who have used the space say it’s “very zen”.
“It’s so peaceful, with the floating lights on and the lamp in the corner for studying, it’s very zen!”
“The new couches are invisible from the door, so it creates anonymity.”
