Welcome to the Highlands College Parent and Carer Newsletter - September 2023
A Warm Welcome from the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

A warm welcome from myself and all at Highlands College as we embark upon another academic year. We take immense pride in the outstanding achievements of our students and their successful transition into universities and the workforce, and look forward to another year of teaching, learning and skills development.

To the parents and carers of our new Year 1 students, we extend a warm welcome to you and your child and thank you for choosing Highlands College as the next step in their educational journey. We are genuinely excited about getting to know your young person over the coming years, and are looking forward to helping them achieve their full potential.

You have likely been introduced to our comprehensive support systems through our various open evenings and should be aware of our Parent and Carer handbook, which compliments the dedicated Parent and Carer section on the College website. These resources are designed to ensure that new students settle in as smoothly as possible, while answering any initial questions you may have. Your initial point of contact will be your child's personal tutor, who will be reaching out to introduce themselves to you early in this half term.

To the parents and carers of our returning students, we hope your children have had a restful and enjoyable summer break and are ready to continue their learning with renewed energy and enthusiasm.

Wishing a successful and enriching academic year ahead for all our students.

Warm regards,

Jo Terry-Marchant

Principal

Freshers' Fayre
We would like to thank all the industry partners who joined our new Sixth Form learners at their Freshers' Fayre earlier this month, and hope that our students enjoyed it too!
The event is designed to inspire students to get involved with local organisations; not only to enhance their skills, but also to make a positive contribution to the wider community.
Carbon Literacy Training for Highlands Staff
As part of the College's sustainability pledge and GOJ drive towards net zero, ten members of Highlands College staff from a variety of curriculum areas completed two days' Carbon Literacy Training with the Decarbonising Government Unit before the summer break in July.

As well as implementing projects aimed at lowering emissions across College, accredited staff members will soon be delivering Carbon Literacy Training to colleagues as part of College CPD.
'Meet the Tutors' Parents Evening

Between 9th – 16th October parents are invited in for a meet and greet with staff and tutors in their child's curriculum area.

This is a great chance for you to find out more about the course that your child is on, put a face to a name and have any questions that you may have answered. Please do attend if possible, and be alert to invites from curriculum areas in the coming week.

The Highlands College Foundation

The Highlands College Foundation is the college’s Charity Arm, and aims to meet the lifelong learning needs of the Island’s community. The funds it raises go towards:

• Bursaries for students across our whole provision

• Funding extra-curricular opportunities to enhance learning

• Purchasing additional equipment to enhance student learning

• Improving student facilities.

If you know of a student who could benefit from funding or assistance from the foundation, direct them too www.Highlands.ac.uk/foundation for more information and how to apply.

Pitching It Out
On Wednesday 20 September, the Level 3 Year 2 Business students had the opportunity to "pitch it out" for a chance to win tickets to this years GREENHOUSE Jersey Business Festival for marketing and sales.
The learners had to come up with a pitch for an advert for the event whilst including key criteria including target audience, USP, core messaging and distribution.
The winning team had a clear, concise and effective pitch that emphasised the use of pictures, the eco-friendly undertone and carousel marketing to grab the attention of their target market.
They will be joining Jacqui Patton alongside a host of expert speakers for a reworking opportunity like no other and the winners were very proud to have won the opportunity to represent the college.
Powering Down (In a Good Way)

Did you know that the new replacement computers in our Media block use 8.6% power of the previous machines in normal use, and 47.1% of the power when at maximum load? You do now!

Right Choice Review

Highlands College has a Right Choice Review Policy and process designed to cover the very exceptional circumstances under which students might be required to change their programme of study within the first half of the term of enrolling on a further education course. This is designed to support the success and retention of students in college.

Tutors will be speaking to tutees about this over the next fortnight. In advance, it may be worth a conversation with your child to ensure that they are happy with and committed to the course that they are on.
