Welcome to the Highlands College Parent and Carer Newsletter - January 2024
Student Progress Updates
Student reports are in the process of being completed by course tutors; these will be emailed to parents and carers by the end of February.

An email will also be sent regarding the upcoming student Progress Evenings to be held on Wednesday March 6th (17.30-20.30) and Monday March 11th (virtual, 16.30-19.30). These will provide the chance for parents and carers to meet and speak directly with their son/daughter's tutors, by appointment.
Parent and Carer Wellbeing Event
Join us in Cafe Connect in the Nightingale building between 18.30 and 20.30 on Wednesday March 6th for our inaugural Parent and Carer Wellbeing event (or pop in before/after your Progress Evening meeting).

Here parents will have the opportunity to talk to a range of local support organisations including Mind Jersey, CAMHS, the Jersey Youth Service, Skills Jersey and our own College counsellors in an informal setting, with drinks and nibbles provided.

Short 'drop-in' meditation and relaxation sessions will also be running for those looking to wind down!
Keep Track with our HC App
All students have our HC Connect app downloaded on their mobile devices, through which vital information such as timetables, College updates and course information is shared.

Why not ask your son/daughter for a look to familiarise yourself with the app's contents and use?
Principal's Trip to Kenya

College Principal Jo Terry-Marchant has spent the past month volunteering in Kenya, where she has been focusing on establishing business and academic links, while also teaching at Malindi Bright Future Academy.

While there Jo has also visited Kakuyuni Vocational Training Centre as a guest of the Principal, Sifa, and met with senior leadership and staff at Utalii College.

'I have met many wonderful Kenyan people and have fast tracked my understanding of their culture and the challenges daily life presents these lovely people,' says Jo. 'I found myself on national tv and local media being interviewed about the Utalii link which has had a lot of positive feedback. It is great to hear Highlands College being spoken about internationally and to see that working with institutions with similar missions and values as ours could bring a global outlook to us and advance their education delivery, especially online. I enjoy connecting with people and am privileged to have had this opportunity.'

Communicating With Your Teenager

Communicating with teenagers can be hard. Maintaining a controlled demeanor is crucial for fostering a positive connection and it is important to actively listen to their thoughts and concerns without judgment. Use a calm and composed tone, avoiding confrontational language. For more tips, visit 11 tips for communicating with your teen | UNICEF Parenting

Highlands College Quality Survey

As ever, we encourage all parents and carers to complete the survey. Your feedback allows us to consolidate our strengths while highlighting any areas that require focus and development. We look forward to receiving your feedback.
