Here are some simple strategies to support a student with hearing loss:
- Ensure the student’s attention before speaking
- Speak slowly and clearly
- Make eye contact while speaking
- Avoid speaking with anything in your mouth
- Keep eye contact with the student
- Avoid standing in front of a light source (e.g., windows or bright lights)
- If the student doesn’t understand, first repeat and then rephrase your message
- Use body language and facial expressions to aid communication
- Consider using BSL (British Sign Language)
